Face Lift Procedures

Facial Plastic Surgeon, Chris Thomson, offers face lift procedures in Christchurch NZ.

The face ages in three ways. Skin quality decreases leading to wrinkling and blemishes, facial volume is lost and facial soft tissues sag. Facelift surgery only corrects the last of these. Skin quality and tightness can be improved with other techniques such as laser resurfacing or chemical peels. Facial volume can be improved with fat augmentation and sometime implants.

Facelift surgery is most effective where sagging is the predominant feature and where patients have light rather than thickset facial features. A successful facelift will typically make patients look about ten years younger. The above adjunctive procedures can improve appearances further. There are many techniques for facelift but generally they all aim to lift the “SMAS” layer, which is deep to the skin, and anchor it up in a new position. The degree of improvement generally mirrors the degree of surgery. Small surgery gives small results and the “lunchtime“ facelift is usually disappointing.

Facelift surgery is performed either on site in our well equipped local anaesthetic theatre at Specialists at Nine under light sedation or if patients prefer or need more extensive surgery then I operate at both St George’s and Southern Cross Hospitals. For most patients with moderate ageing change a MACS lift usually suffices, giving a short downtime, minimal swelling and bruising and return to work within 7-10 days. Results are usually excellent.
